Swell Bar
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A swellable bar (also called a hydrophilic waterstop or swellable water bar) is a waterproofing material used in construction joints to prevent water leakage through concrete joints.
A swellable bar is a strip or cord made from hydrophilic materials—typically rubber, bentonite clay, or polymer composites—that expand (swell) when they come into contact with water.
This swelling action fills gaps or voids within the joint, creating a watertight seal.
Purpose
Used primarily in:
• Construction joints (cold joints between new and old concrete)
• Pipe penetrations
• Precast element joints
• Basements, tunnels, water tanks, and retaining walls
Its purpose is to stop water ingress or egress through joints where two concrete pours meet.
How It Works
1. The bar is fixed (glued or nailed) along the center of the joint before the second concrete pour.
2. When water seeps toward the joint, the material absorbs the moisture and swells up to several times its original volume.
3. This expansion presses tightly against the surrounding concrete, sealing off any potential leak path.

Installation Notes
• Place it centrally in the joint (not too close to the surface to prevent displacement).
• Fix securely with nails, adhesive, or mesh before second pour.
• Protect from premature swelling (keep dry before concreting).
• Often used with backup systems like PVC waterstops in critical joints.
